But they outfoxed the Nazis and the Russians by embarking on a hazardous and daunting escape plan that took two years and spanned three continents. Melamed, along with his mother and father, were forced to flee their home in Poland - his mother was beaten by the Gestapo, who had come looking for his father, he recounted. “Risk was really a part of my being,” said Melamed, who links that trait to his family’s flight from the Nazis and the Russians during World War II. I asked Melamed what compelled him to leave law, where an attorney is trained to limit risk when making agreements, and leap full-time into futures contracts, where fortunes are often won or lost in less than a day. It was a nice living, enough to buy that flashy Corvette. ![]() ![]() ![]() His firm handled basic legal fodder including divorces, bankruptcies and personal injury cases. ![]() He worked at the Merc half-time while also hanging out a shingle to practice law with a partner for six years. ![]()
